What Type of Massage Can You Expect From Wholistic Health and Fitness?
Wholistic Health and Fitness provides the type of massage that is uniquely different from most Spas or massage practices that you will find. Though with Wholistic Health and Fitness traditional massages such as Swedish are offered, my primary focus is medical massage.
Medical Massage usually refers to massage treatments that are prescribed by a Physician and typically include modalities such as, Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue and Trigger Point. Active Isolated Stretching can also be use in conjuction with these type of therapies . These types of treatments specifically deal with chronic conditions due to soft tissue irregularities, muscular dysfunction and injury brought on by blunt force trauma or repetitive use. These techniques are useful in treating conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, migraine headaches, back pain, and many other maladies.
It is my belief that by taking an holistic approach
to soft tissue injury. Such as integrating therapeutic massage, stretching, strengthening exercises and nutritional supplementation that it can lead to a long lasting as well as possible permanent recovery.
My goal is to educate my clients raising their awareness to the fact that there are often alternatives to painful invasive surgical procedures and drugs, also to teach them how to treat and possibly avoid most common injury.
My Experience
For the past 7 years I have been practicing massage therapy, receiving my certification through the American Institute of Alternative Medicine school of massage located in Oldbridge NJ.
Long before my career started as a massage therapist I had been well established for 20 years, starting first as a fitness instructor at the Bally's Total Fitness Health Club in East Brunswick NJ. Then becoming nationally certified by the American Aerobic Association International/International Sports Medicine Association AAAI/ISMA) and the American Fitness Professionals and Associates (AFPA)as a Personal Trainer and Nutritional Consultant.
I now utilize my combined skills, education and experience in my Therapeutic practice to help individuals reach their goals.

My name is Michelle Cittadino and I am 38 years old and the mother of four children. My boys are Jake and Justin (seven year old twins), Joseph who is 3 years old and Jayden, the newest edition, 7 months old. All of my children were born c-section.
After the birth of my 3 year old, I suffered from post-partum depression. My doctor prescribed Zoloft. This was probably the most difficult time of my life. The birth of my fourth child was also traumatic. I spent two weeks in the hospital after giving birth due to a bowel obstruction. The reality of having to cope with four children made me realize that I needed to be physically and mentally prepared to care for my family.
I joined Ballys Total Fitness and met Anthony Kelley. He assessed my physical condition and prescribed a workout schedule for me. I also suffered from lower back pain (sciatica) over the past few years. This was very painful and I tried to get relief by going to a chiropractor. It was not until I worked out with Anthony that my lower back pain was gone. Today, seven months after my last c-section I am stronger and in better shape than I have ever been in. I have a lot more energy and there is no sign of post-partum depression. I run 3 days a week and take my older boys with me. I work out with Anthony twice a week. Anthony Kelley has helped me immensely and I have him to thank for being in the best condition I have ever been in. I am pain free and do not require medication to live my life.
Thank you Anthony!

A grateful client,
Anthony Kelley was recommended to me by the receptionist at the Excelsior athletic club on 57th Street and Second avenue in Manhattan about a year and a half ago because I had a sore right leg from an injury.
My leg is completely healed now because of Anthony’s stretching and massage of the thigh, cold packs, and exercises he gave me to do on my own.
He was able to diagnose the problem because of his knowledge of the anatomy of the body.
He has a most positive and wonderfully healthy attitude and energy when working with someone and is also honest and reliable and responsible.
I am still working with Anthony doing basic stretching and exercising to keep my body healthy. I wish
Anthony much luck in his new location and I know that people who work with him are so fortunate to have such a caring knowledgeable and ethical person to work with.
Most gratefully and respectfully his client,
Madeline Safran

To Whom it may concern:
In October2002, I recieved Myofascial Release
Therapy from Anthony Kelley Certified Massage Therapist for Plantar Fasciitis of my right foot.
Before recieving therapy my heel was severely sore, especially whenever I would step on it. I am an avid runner and I was horrified that I was unable to run any more because of the severe pain and soreness of the heel.
After one therapeutic session with Mr. Kelley my Plantar Fasciitis was remarkably relieved. Although still slighty tender for about two weeks after therapy my plantar Fasciitis is completely gone. I have gotten the the relief I needed and I owe it all to Anthony Kelley.
Massage Therapy is a great alternative for healing the body. I highly recommend it!
Sincerely,
Frances T. Moore

Q&A
Q: What is the difference between Chiropractors and therapist that practice Medical Massage when dealing with chronic pain?
A: Although we both mostly treat the same type of muscular dysfunction problems, some of the treatment methods are vastly different. Chiropractors in general, believe that pain in a particular area is usually caused by and emanates from a disruption in the nervous system and by manipulating various parts of the spine as it correlates to the area of pain, the pain through regular Chiropractic care can be cured. In medical massage the pain is addressed in more of a direct manner by working more specifically on the different muscles, fascia and trigger points that are causing the problem. In short Chiropractors work mostly with the spinal system and Massage Therapists work with the muscles and soft tissue.
Q: How do the treatments between Chiropractors and Medical Massage Practitioners vary as far as postural abnormalcies that cause problems?
A: Chiropractors treat misalignments by using torque to reduce the subluxation of the spine for example in such cases of scoliosis. Massage therapist are not qualified nor should ever use this highly specialized technique. Massage therapist that practice clinical massage are trained to work with the musculo- skeletal system through various massage and stretching techniques, we feel by loosening tight muscles that attach to bones, the body can be realigned over time.
Q: What is the difference between Spa type and medical massage
A: Spa type massage such as Swedish massage, Shiatshu, Hot Stone Therapy, Aroma Therapy Body Scrubs etc.. provide benefits that are more of a relaxing nature that cause certain physiological changes in the body ands can arguably be considered medically therapeutic to a certain point. These types of massage can be useful in assisting the lowering of the blood pressure, reducing stress that can lead to other problems, aid in circulatory problems and help in depression and the general sense of well being.
The type of medical massage therapy can vary depending on the need and determined through the assessment of the client. Typically individuals that suffer from chronic pain or any repetitive stress injury may look to find relief from a qualified Massage Therapist who practices one of the following techniques: Neuromuscular Therapy, Myofascial Release, Deep Tissue, Trigger Point Therapy, Cross Fiber Massage, Active Isolated Stretching.
Medical massage therapy can...
- help regulate blood flow, blood pressure and relax & lengthen muscle fibers for recovery or improved function
- decrease the "stress response" allowing less anxiety, clearer thinking, less pain, better digestion, better moods and better sleep
- prevent, reduce or eliminate adhesions (scar tissue)
- improve joint function and range of motion
- improve breathing
- decrease areas of swelling
- promote detoxification through the lymphatics
- relieve constipation and some digestive orders
- improve skin nutrition & appearance
- help condition tissues after exercise or injury
- substitute for exercise in those unable to move independently
- help re-establish proper nerve flow in damaged, fatigued or injured areas
- promote the release of endorphins and other "natural painkillers"
- increase energy levels
Q: What are some of the contraindications for getting a massage
A: Inflammation of the veins (phlebitis)
Infectious diseases
Certain forms of cancer
Some skin conditions
Some cardiac problems
Diabetes
